When You Feel Lost in your Career

“You’re never really going to have it all figured out,” he said to me.

For most of my career, I felt really disconnected from my work. I knew I didn’t want any of my bosses’ jobs, but I also didn’t know exactly what I wanted. I felt lost.

Comment below if you feel lost or disconnected from work, and ever wonder if it all matters or will mean anything someday?

I’ve worked on this for years, have felt massive frustration, and often felt like an outsider about it. So many people around me seemed to at least be connected to the direction they were headed. All I knew was what I didn’t want.

This can feel isolating, and I’m here to tell you that you’re not alone, and it’s A-OKAY to not know (which I hated hearing by the way, when all I wanted was to just KNOW).

I realized recently that this year is my 10 year anniversary since graduating from college, which means I’ve been pursuing my career(s) for 10 years. Here’s what I’ve learned since then.

When you don’t know, one thing to commit to is patience. I FEEL you if you don’t want to hear this. “Patience” has often felt like the arch nemesis of my life.

Here’s the thing though. Lack of patience = lack of trust. It’s true, I doubted whether it would all work out.

SO, trust that your path is leading you somewhere beautiful. Trust that your interests, passions and current location are exactly right. Trust that what feels hard now will help you and others infinitely in the future. Trust that everything you learn will have a valuable place along your journey. All of these things became true for me with patience.

Understanding and seeing this come to life in your own world takes time. Allow it to happen.
