Why Delegating Well is so Important

I used to go to work and try to learn things so I could outsmart my colleagues and advance ahead of them. When I did this, I always ended up in burn out.

One day, I did one of those values exercises, and realized that my most fulfilled moments were related to learning and teaching.

I tried to apply this at work, and unintentionally unlocked the keys to my own success.

LEARNING - When I started learning just for the sake of learning and curiosity, everything became interesting. I began to listen more actively and could apply all of it back into my work. Ultimately, I didn’t have to “try so hard” because I figured out a way to use everything around me for my own projects and success.

TEACHING - When you’re having more fun learning, you naturally want to teach others. And, because teaching was a way that felt in service, I was always happy to spend time doing it. I would volunteer to teach someone junior to me or in another department how to do a task that I had already mastered. When you become an effective teacher, you begin to naturally delegate. And when you’re able to teach someone to do a task, and then delegate the job to them without grasping too tightly to someone else’s outcome, it only opens up new opportunities for you to take on more responsibility and new roles.

This was the main thing I practiced at work to help me get promoted fast.

Most importantly, when I came to work each day to live my values, my energy capacity was endless. Of course, I still got tired. I’m a human. But, at the end of the day I still felt energized to have dinner with my husband or friends and be excited to listen and learn more about their lives, work and days. This is what I mean when I say become a leader without burning out. You can tap into the energy source that drives you, even in a job you don’t love and even when the to-do list seem endless.
