Why Yoga is Good for your Work

I used to think of my work life and yoga life as two totally separate worlds. I would go to work all day, and then mentally switch gears to go to a training or to teach or take a class.

It wasn’t until I clearly saw the cycle of “go to work and get stressed, and then go to yoga to un-do the stress,” that it dawned on me. Each day, the line between the two blurred a little bit more.

At first I saw how yoga after work would also affect how I was able to sleep well, which affected my work the following day. Then, I realized that if I applied the things I practiced on my mat in real-time at work, I could release stress before it built up. This would often have me arriving to the end of the work day with energy to spare. SAY WHAT?!

When you have even just a little energy to spare, this is what happens -

  • you don’t take everything personally

  • you have more mental clarity and focus, usually making you more effective

  • you probably eat lunch and drink enough water

  • you more often are able to discern and access the right thing to do

  • you’re more willing to tell the truth and give feedback, even when there’s backlash

  • you advocate for yourself

  • you can access why you’re doing what you’re doing

Many people don’t know how yogic all of these things really are. Here are some of the values yogis practice and teach -

  • non-attachment and surrender

  • concentration

  • self-care and cleanliness

  • discernment

  • telling the truth

  • consciously directing energy

  • self-study and reflection

This is a 1:1 comparison that hardly covers all the ways the yogis knew about living your life and doing your work effectively and without so much stress, anxiety and harm to ourselves (which by the way is the practice of non-violence, one the first yogic lessons)

This is why Yoga is a massive part of the formula I use to help women become leaders without burn out.
