Do This When You Don't Know

I want to share this little tip with you today that always helps me un-earth an insight, the next sentence or the next slide.

There’s a moment or many moments throughout our days when we get “stuck” or come to a point where we “don’t know” what comes next. This can be frustrating and uncomfortable. Most of us do not like the feeling associated with not knowing or this brief moment of uncertainty.

Most of the time, when we reach this pause, we’ll do a couple things. We’ll either check our email or check our phone, which usually leads to at least 5 mins and at most 15 minutes where we get to be distracted from these feelings of uncertainty.

One day at work, I discovered that when I went to the bathroom, I would often “unlock” or “find” what I was looking for in the way of an answer. I didn’t think much of it until I pieced together all the elements that created a situation for my brain to function optimally.

The bathroom was generally quiet, and when you go into a stall there’s no stimulation, especially work bathrooms which are the most boring, ugly bathrooms to usually exist. So, when you go in, it’s just you and your own poo, literally and figuratively. You can’t escape yourself (p.s. this only works if you don’t take your phone).

The truth is that YOU ACTUALLY HAVE ALL OF THE ANSWERS. And when you distract yourself or are distracted, it’s a lot harder to access this knowledge, which leads you to think that you might not have the answers or an answer. And when you don’t think you have any solutions, you start to lose trust. And when we don’t trust ourselves, we stop taking action. And when we stop taking action, we don’t get the results we want.

So, all in, when you don't know, go to the bathroom and trust that you actually do know.

It’s simple and it might be tough to access. If you constantly feel like a fish out of water or never have enough time to do your job right or feel that you never know, send me a message on the “Contact” page to set up a free call to begin your journey of trusting yourself.
