The Three Myths about Leadership

When we think of the leaders of the world, or the leaders in our lives, we often dream up an image of who they are and how they operate that feels foreign to how we could ever feel ourselves because of our circumstances. You might think that you’re not a leader right now because you think that leaders -

  1. Have all the answers

  2. Are always available to support their team

  3. Never get stressed

HERE’S THE TRUTH:

  • Leaders don’t have more information than you. They know how to make decisions with whatever information they have at any given moment. They are willing to take a little risk because they trust themselves.

  • Leaders aren’t always available. They make themselves available for the things that will make the most impact towards their goals. This often pisses their own teams right off. At the same time, if a leader is always involved, their teams will never learn how to develop autonomy.

  • Leaders definitely experience the onslaught of stress. Instead of letting the stress define how they react to their teams and circumstances, leaders always remember that stress only erodes their progress and never advances it.
